Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of personalities, and a thrilling plot including divine entities, evil spirits, and dark forces growing in power within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

The latest chapter ended with a major cliffhanger and presented the premier party of heroes who will split off from the main group to embark on their separate journey, separate from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team features the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Considering an extensive roster, it was clear from the outset that keeping everyone at a single group would be impossible.

That’s why, the initial installments of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before dividing into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Strategists, and Questers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for participants who are drawn to a traditionally charged battle-oriented story mode where non-violent answers are rare.

Initially, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander might seem out of place, but the actions of the latest installment make it clear why these five characters are ideally matched for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a brutal opening clash with the antagonists.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose death initiated the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his personal gain, entering Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting the character, and taking all the enchanted items to sell off.

Casimir then settled his liabilities and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, beyond the city, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each adventurer has a specific drive to leave the city the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, seeks revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
  • The strong character and The healer, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to execute the fighter and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • But, their status as important members in the powerful family could help the party enter locations they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character swore a eternal obligation to The savior for his rescue and will now accompany him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are wanted by the authorities that govern the setting for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and Wicander turned against House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The target is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This results in them little choice but to head to the remote area in search of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s follow-up content, we find out that the Soldiers table won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the players to form the Questers and Planners parties.

Viewers can look forward to learning which adventurers will be where in the season’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on October 24.
