European football's governing body has initiated a disciplinary case against Chelsea winger the Portuguese international following an incident where he pushed over a sideline assistant in a Champions League loss against Paris St‑Germain.
The Portugal international, Neto, knocked the attendant in stoppage time of Wednesday's knockout stage fixture at Parc des Princes – a match in which his team suffered a 5-2 – which caused the boy falling from a chair.
This provoked a confrontation between both sets of players.
The governing body confirmed the case has been opened against Neto for "unsporting behaviour" in accordance with the official rules.
"The relevant committees will make a ruling regarding this matter at a later date," UEFA announced.
Neto said sorry after the match and blamed getting swept up "in the intensity of the match" while he was attempting to regain possession of the ball.
"I'm not like this. It was in the heat of the moment and I want to apologise. I gave him my shirt. I deeply regret it - an apology is necessary," Neto explained to the media.
"I have limited French, and [Portugal team-mate] Vitinha intervened and explained to him that it was a momentary lapse.
"At the end he accepted the apology and I presented him with my jersey and said sorry many times. He realized what had happened and was content with the outcome."
The London club face Paris St-Germain in the upcoming second leg in the second leg, after Newcastle's visit to Stamford Bridge on Saturday in domestic competition.
