Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their identities blacked out.
But a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative approval to pass a law mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained no previously unseen data.
